Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!!!mmmmmm....turkey.
Things Romana is thankful for...
-That the turkey was thawed enough to cook
...and didn't burn.
-That I made it through another Thanksgiving without breaking any china.
-That when I did my yearly cleaning out my 'horizontal filing cabinent' (aka, the dining room table) I didn't find any outstanding bills that hadn't been paid.
On a more serious note:
-I am thankful that I have a roof over my head.
-I am thankful for all of my friends and family. <--most important thing! :)

Today's random thoughts-paper clip, gum, and a whole lotta duct tape...

Flying Daleks! When first introduced to the Daleks, they didn't like stairs (well, you wouldn't either if you were a huge salt shaker shaped part creature/part machine thing with no obvious way of moving about except for sliding across the floor). By Remebrance of the Daleks they could levitate up stairs, which was a nasty suprise for the 7th Doctor. Now, apparently, not only can the levitate up stairs, but they can fly and exterminate from mid-air!! SWEET. ;)
It's the Monster of Peladon all over again...well, sort of. This time, the Cleveland Public Library is the culprit. Back in July, I requested the first season of Aqua Teen Hunger Force on DVD from Cleveland Public, and was able to have it sent to a Cleveland Hts branch near me. I was number 7 in the queue, and am now down to number 1. Unfortunately, according to the system, the dvd I requested has been transfering between libraries for about a month now! Now, before you say maybe it's because I'm crossing over library systems, get this-I did the exact same thing with the movie Van Helsing last month-only I was something like 145 in the queue. ...I just got an email today saying that a copy Van Helsing is waiting to be picked up by me in my local branch. I checked the status of Aqua Teen-it's still being transfered between libraries!! What the...I want my Aqua Teen! :p
Well, auroral activity is down for those of us in the middle/lower latitudes, but there are still some pretty cool pictures from last weeks display being posted. These are really cool, and here are some more good ones from Quebec. Pretty, huh? :) 0 comments

Aurora pic-links

The photographer has some pretty cool shots in her gallery-too bad I can't figure out where she is (well, I only looked at the first page of pics...)
BTW, in case you live in Northeast Ohio and are wondering... this is what was seen in Akron, Ohio last night. Pretty cool, huh? :)
It was a little over a year ago (November 4th, 2003) the most intense x-ray solar flare recorded in history was produced by our sun (measuring somewhere between X30-X40 levels)

lucky little sis :)
D.W.Q.M.: "Our destiny is in the stars, so lets go and search for it." -the First DoctorMy sister is one lucky brat. LOL. Last night, she was standing outside her home, talking to a friend, when she looked up at the sky and screamed, "Oh, my God! I'll call you right back! Gotta call my sister!"
She saw the aurora, right above her home! I figured she was far enough up north and away from any major city lights to get a good show, but this is the first time she's noticed it. Quite a display, too, from what I hear. She described it as green and red, but mostly green from her viewpoint-and pulsating quite a bit. Since the sun was setting (it was about 6:00 CST), she said it was getting brighter and more spectacular by the minute. She brought out the kiddies so they could see the display, too. Lucky ducks! From what she described, the image looks something like
this. (even though this image is from Newfoundland, Canada.) She was really excited-heck, I would be too! :) I was excited for her. :) :)
This was a pretty strong display. I was a little disappointed that I didnt' receive an astro alert about any flare activity, but that's okay. I hear it was visible in Ohio-there were reports from Lorrain about auroral activity last night. I went outside to look, but I didn't see much-too cloudy, and too much city light. Oh, well! Here's a link to some pics from Long Island.
According to the Solar Terrestrial Dispatch, there was a major class X2 solar flare today-they predict that it might hit Earth on November 9th or 10th. Remember, the X class flares are the strongest-last years' end of October displays were X17 and above. But you never know-there was a pretty strong showing last night-and one of the image contributors from the STD thought it was better than last years!
In other news, I'm working on 4 "projects" this week-baby shower games! I'm in charge of the games for the baby shower I'm going to this weekend. :) I'm also in the process of taking down my Halloween stuff and putting up my Thanksgiving stuff-I'm almost finished taking the stuff down... I need to work on my sister's baby blanket some more-no change since I last updated you all about that-I do need to post the picture I have, though... I'm also finally working on updating my Travel Dog page! Hopefully I will finish it soon. :) 0 comments

November Night Sky
D.W.Q.M.: "Where in time and space am I?" -the Second DoctorOkay, so this is a few days late-I'm sorry! Today's astronomy post is brought to you by Sky and Telescope. :)
Daytime Occulation of Jupiter All times EST, for Cleveland.
Okay, so this is a daytime event-so sue me! Actually, it'll be really hard to see, but I still think it's cool, so I'm posting it anyway. ;)
On Novemeber 9th, beginning just before 11am, the moon will occult Jupiter. At about 11:00am, Jupiter will disappear behind the moon, and reappear again about an hour later (noon or so). Jupiter and the moon will be a little higher than the sun, and off to the right. Of course, you'll need a telescope with a solar filter to view this, and whether or not you'll be able to find Jupiter or the moon at all will depend on the transparency of the sky (how blue it is...) Like I said, probably not good for the casual viewer, but like I said- I thought it was cool so I posted it anyway. ;)

Taurid Meteor Shower
The Taurids is the lesser known November shower. Not very spectacular-only 3 or 4 meteors per hour during peak time, but they can be seen from late October throughout November-and many meteors can be seen during the evening, as well as the morning. The shower's radiant is about 5 degrees south of the Pleiades-the higher the radiant, the more the meteors appear everywhere in the sky. :) The meteors of this shower are brought to us by the debris field of the comet 2P/Encke. :)
Leonids Meteor Shower
Although the storm has passed, the Leonids are expected to peak on November 17th this year, after the moon has set. Best conditions-expect to see 15 to 20 meteors per hour. Their trails tend to be long and bright. The meteors of this shower are broguth to us by the debris field of the comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle.
A few years ago, a bunch of us met at a friend's house at 4 am to witness the meteor storm-there were so many meteors, we lost count!! It was alot of fun. :) (yes, we froze our butts off, but it was worth it!)

Trick or Treats 2004

I hope everyone had a great Halloween! I went over to P^2
to help out with Trick-or-Treats, and we had a blast!!
I went over early to help decorate-we had pumpkins-Perseph made 'pumpkin pi', and I made one to resemble Scorpius (although both of my pumpkins were attacked by evil squirrels-bad squirrels!) I still put them out anyway. ;) I also decided to make scarecrows this year-I used some old clothes, and Perseph's smiley faced basketball and volleyball. I had printed out a couple of masks-one of Marilyn Monroe and one of Bill Gates as Frankenstein, and taped them onto the balls. Adam and Jerm spread cobwebs all over the bushes in the front, and I made a makeshift graveyard in the ivy in the front yard. The place looked pretty cool! Hopefully our pics turned out. ;) We finished decorating in time to get our costumes together. :)
This year, I still had the Medieval garb that I borrowed for Marcon-Perseph lent me a silk shirt to go with it, and trusted me with her tiara, too. ;) I had my witches wig, and put enough makeup on to make it look like I had arised from the dead. I lent Perseph my witches hat and cape, and Paul dressed up as a mad scientist (he reminded us of Steve from Aqua Teen Hunger Force, so we ended up calling him Steve the rest of the night.) Jerm switched between a Frankenstein and a devil's mask throught the night-mostly the Frankenstein one, so he was dubbed, 'Frank'. The first kiddies to arrive were little ones, and I inadvertently scared them off-so I told Jerm he had to give the first kids the candy. Since it was nice outside, we all eventually went outside and sat on the step and danced around the yard. (ok, ok, ok-I danced around the yard-the others watched and laughed. Hey, we were playing music-someone had to dance!;) ) I also walked around the yard slowly-ended up startling a couple of the older kids-in my opinion, that's a pretty big accomplishment! ;) The best, though-was when Jerm was just inside the door-he waited until a group of kids got their candy, and chose that moment to moan like Frankenstien-the kids screamed and ran away! At one point, I was sitting by myself when a group of kids came up-one of the girls said, 'Are you the Bride of Frankenstein?' I doubt Jerm heard that, but he chose that moment to walk up to the screen door with his mask...the next thing I heard was, 'See?! I told you!!!' LOL. Poor Jerm.
We had a ton of kids-Perseph and I had 5 bags of candy-Jerm contributed 3 more, and we still had to send Adam out to buy 3 more bags! We held out until 8, but just barely. We tried limiting it to one piece per kid, but it's not always possible. (at one point, one kid held out his bag to me three times-since there were so many kids at the time, I didn't have the heart to call him on it.) We were one of the few houses (actually, we may have been the only one) that kept the light on until 8. There were alot of cool costumes out there! My personal favorite was the McDonalds Fries-we had two of those! They looked so cute! One little girl across the street was in a cute little cow outfit-she was jumping around in the leaves...awwww...then there was the little lady bug....awww....(I better stop now.) ;)
Since it was so nice out, we weren't the only ones sitting outside, which I thought was cool. When I was the Trick-or-treatin' age, I remember some of my favorite houses to visit were ones where the people were out in the yard or sitting on the porch. Everytime someone commented on how cool the house looked, it reminded me of that. I'm glad we could pass on the fun we had on Halloween when we were kids!! :) I love this time of year.
BTW, Jerm only managed to scare me once this year-HA! :p ;)
Blanket update: 18/36 inches (I haven't had much time to work on it the last couple of weeks..)
