Happy Halloween, everybody!!!
I'm sorry I haven't updeated on a regular basis-not even my front porch. I've either been too busy, too sick, or just plain too lazy. ;)
So, since I've been lazy, but still want to put my blog in the spirit of Halloween, I decided to post this picture of our pumpkins from 2003:

I'm excited-tonight I'm heading over to Foofy and Perseph's to help hand out candy. I'm heading over there early so I can help decorate their yard. I've got fresh batteries for my camera (I am so sorry, Perseph!) so I can take pictures of our Edward Gorey-themed pumpkins!! I'm sooo excited-it's always fun at the PF's!!! ;) (didn't you know? There house is the place to be on Halloween!)
I even got a little dressed up for work today-I've got a Halloween tshirt on, plus I'm wearing the TARDIS key, and my Doctor Who scarf-everyone loves it!! To be honest, though-it's hard to type with a 12ft scarf draped around your neck... ;)

No, those aren't thugs...

The other night I was talking with my sister on the phone when she noticed Boo had left her bike out by the road again. She decided to go out and bring in up the garage herself. Since she was on her cordless, I went out with her-we were still chatting aimlessly as she walked towards the bike, but then she started to sound distracted, and said, 'hang on a sec', then began to mumble a bit, then all of the suddened, said, 'Uff! I just freaked myself out.' and sounded like she was tripping over something. She regained her composure as the garage door started to close, and then said to me, 'You know, I'm not worried about thugs in this neighborhood. I'm worried about bears.'
Me: "Bears?!"
Al: "Bears."
Apparently not too long ago, a neighbor of hers, who lives just three houses down, decided to throw some corn off their deck one night.
The next morning they discovered a big black bear sleeping under their deck!
Whoa...
She also said that there have been cougars spotted in Taylor Falls. That's only seven miles away-and there are plenty of fields and forests for these fellas to hang out in. Al says she loves to step outside at night and listen to the wolves howl, but the bears and cougars spook her just a little bit. No wonder the dog kennels are completely fenced in, top to bottom. My sister never leaves Brutis outside at night for long.
..and my friends are worried about skunks...
Here I thought the fox in the cemetary near me was big news! When I go up there for Christmas, those won't be bunny tracks I'm looking for... |

October Night Sky

The Moon and Planets
October 7th: the crescent moon is below Venus, ver low in the southwest at dusk.
October 16th: (starting October 16th) Mars will be closer to the Earth (and brighter in the sky) than it will be until 2018. Note: This should not be confused with the Mars Hoax. Mars will NOT be as big as the moon-this is just the closest it's going to be to Earth for a few years. :) [see October 29th]
October 17th: Full Moon. Partial eclipse of the Moon peaks at 8:03am EDT-best seen west of a line from Toronto to Miami.
October 18th: Moon near Mars after 8pm, EDT
October 24th: Moon near Saturn after midnight.
October 29th: Mars nearest Earth, very bright in the East as darkness falls, won't be this close again until 2018.
October 30th: Daylight Savings ends.
Meteors!
October 21st: Orionid meteor shower peaks...unfortunately the moon interferes (boo!)
Did anybody see the Draconids? Apparently the geometry was right for a brief shower on October 8th, 17h Universal time. Back in 1985, they produced 500 meteors per hour for a couple of hours. Just curious.
Other cool stuff
Astronomers have discovered that our new 10th Planet isn't travelling alone! So, since they named the planet 'Xena', guess what they are planning on naming it's moon? Yup, that's right, "Gabrielle". I was still hoping for Mondas, and then, possibly 'Telos' for the moon. LOL, ROFL. ;) (Cyberman joke, sorry.) ;)

October 4th, 1957: Sputnik 1, the first artificial sattelite to orbit Earth, is launched by the Soviet Union.
October 5th, 1923: Edwin Hubble discovers a cepheid variable in M31-the first proof of the remoteness fo the galaxies.
October 6th, 1995: Discovery of the first planet orbiting a sun-like star (51 Pegasi).
October 7th, 1959: Luna 3 takes the first pictures of the Moon's far side.
October 22nd, 1975: Venera 9 is the first spacecraft to return images of the surface of Venus.

Yay, autumn!

I love this time of year. October marks the beginning of my favorite four months of the year. I love the colors of the leaves, the coolness in the air (which is missing at the moment. ;) ), the smell of burning wood, pumpkin spice. Ahhh...
Halloween is coming!! Already I have a ton of ideas that I need to share with Perseph about decorating her house and yard for Halloween (some of which I have shared with her in a series of brief emails as they pop into my head. LOL) According to her neighbors, Perseph's is the place to be on Halloween. :)
I can't forget my own place, too. I've been really slacking-6 years ago, I would have been ready for Halloween by now. I don't even have my Halloween boxes unpacked yet! I do have my wreath up, and I finished putting in all the window lights. When I was testing my lights, I was very disappointed to discover that a strand I had had for six years refused to work. Since I had to go to Walmart, I decided to try to look for a replacement strand. I wasn't expecting to find any, since the last time I was at Walmart, their Halloween stuff was a mess. I was pleasantly suprised to find not only a replacement strand, but it was cheaper than the original set! Yay! :)
As soon as I get my Halloween village up, I'll post pictures. Shar and I are having lunch on Thursday, and if it's nice enough, I'm hoping we'll have time to walk around campus and take some pictures of the scarecrows that are up. :) |

Well, um, yah, updates
Well, I haven't been posting the last couple of weeks because I just haven't been up to it (for reasons I won't delve into right now) But go figure, the day I decide to post, dreamingheart seems to be down. LOL. ;) I'll just save this and the next post and try to publish when it's back up. :-DI need to update my sidebar...there's a couple of new blogs that I've been reading that are absolutely hysterical. Scary, but hysterical. ;) Both written by librarians-and here I thought life at our library was crazy!!! ;)
