New cards in 2006...

Ahh...I am really enjoying the gift subscription of Non-Sport Update that I got for Christmas/birthday-it's so nice not to have to worry if my local Borders has it yet!!
Lately I've been sticking to just collecting promo cards, with the exception of the hunt for TV Guides last week for the SciFi Friday cards that were inserted in them. (I did managed to find them all. Yay!). This year, however, I may have to put some money aside in my 'save for fun' money jar-there's alot of good stuff coming out!!
Rittenhouse Archives, which is one of my favorite card manufacturers, will have new Stargate and Stargate: Atlantis sets coming out-as well as sets for the new Battlestar Galactica-I read an article about the first season set, and I can't wait to get my hands on them!
Another favorite of mine, Strickly Ink from the UK, will have some interseting sets. Strickly Ink has the license to make cards for all the CSI series-not only will there be new ones of CSI and Miami, but one that will cover the first season of New York as well. Of course, the real reason why Strickly Ink is one of my faves is because of the awesome Doctor Who sets they have released. ;) I was lucky enough to get my hands on a box for both the first and second series they released a few years ago-I managed to get two full sets out of both boxes! This year they are planning a Doctor Who trilogy-according to NSU, the first set will be the Companions in April, followed in May by the Villians with the third set, the Doctors to be released in June. Ooooooh, I can't wait, I can't wait!!
Hmmm...methinks I better reorganize my cards soon-I've been getting a little sloppy lately-I have opened packs, loose cards, and lonely binders waiting to be filled all over my bedroom-better get crackin' if I want to keep collectin'! |

Liftoff! :)
D.W.Q.M.: "Eureka!" -the Third DoctorNew Horizons took off at 2 pm EST today!
I had been listening since 1, keeping Karen informed as they kept changing the launch time due to low clouds. As soon as they hit T-minus 4 minutes and counting, Karen tuned in at her desk. When the countdown hit T-minus 1 minute, I started to watch the live feed from NASA tv. :)
It will pass the moon about 9 hours (from liftoff), and will pass by Jupiter in the spring of 2007, where it will get a gravity boost and shorted the trip to Pluto by a few years.

New Horizons rescheduled...again...

News from NASA: the New Horizons launch has been scrubbed for the day. There was a power outage in Maryland (the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University is the spacecraft's mission operations center, and they are running on back up power) due to severe storms in the area. No word yet if they are going to reschedule the launch for tomorrow. If they do, the launch window will be 1:08pm-3:07pm EST.
The launch was originally scheduled for yesterday, but they had to scrub it due to high winds at the launch site. Karen and I were following the countdown for about the last hour of the launch window (3:23pm, EST) (well, Karen was-I didn't get the chance until the last 45 minutes or so). We kept each other updated since neither of us could stay at our desks the whole time. lol ;)
New Horizons is the first mission in NASA's New Frontiers program-it is also the first spacecraft to visit Pluto and it's moon, Charon. |

FINALLY!!!!!!

I first saw the news in Outpost Gallifrey's news section.
Then I checked out the official press release from the BBC.
Starting in March (probably after the season finales of the Stargates and BSG). Also, the release of the dvds have been moved to July 4th 2006. Time to update my countdowns! (note: the countdown to scifi is based on Outpost Gallifrey's guess that it'll be aired a week after the season finales of the SciFi Friday shows-I will update it again when I hear the official start date.)

A new year, some new wisdom...sorta. ;)

Today people having been making 'getting old' jokes at me...I wonder why? ;) *heehee* I was also asked if I could still tell people how old I was-I said for one more year. They guessed my age right away. ;)
As always, I must say, "Happy Anniversary of becoming a mom, Mom!" :-D (she always laughs when I tell her that.)
Today's post is dedicated to my Mom. :)
When we were Christmas shopping last month, she said she wanted to buy some socks for the grandchildren, because they always seem to be loosing them. You remember what it was like-they get lost in your room, eaten by the washer, dryer and the dog-when you're over at a friend's, they are sometimes left there. Even in the cold Minnesotan weather, our feet got into our boots ok, but somehow our socks never made it. Turns out the same thing is happening with the next generation...strange. ;)
As we went shopping for 4 different sizes of socks, I remembered what it was like when she gave us socks when we were kids. Remember the scene from A Christmas Story when Ralphie and Randy each open a gift with a pair of socks? They look at each other, make a face, then toss them over their shoulders. That's kinda what we did. I mean, we're kids-who wants socks for Christmas?
Boy, if I knew then, what I know now. Buying socks on your own can be expensive. I hope the little ones enjoy their socks-I was sort of wishing that my mom would also buy a pair of grownup sized socks for me. LOL ;) (For the record, socks weren't the only gifts my Mom gave the kiddies-she is a grandma after all!! :) )
Here's to my Mom, and her practical gifts! (psst...hey Mom-please send socks!) ;)
